About the Class

This is a live, 1-day, PowerPoint lite workshop aimed to provide an overview of Kanban, an approach to incremental, evolutionary process and systems change for organizations. This course will primarily focus on the basic elements of Kanban as it relates to exposing workflow and process inefficiencies that can often create chaos in a system’s value delivery mechanisms. During the course, attendees will learn how to optimize flow of value in systems by introducing load balancing constraints while considering the Kanban core principles and properties.

Audience

Individuals and/or organizations that are interested in learning about the basic elements of Kanban to help kick off a Kanban project and/or optimize their existing project towards continuous improvement.

Learning Objectives

Defining Kanban

  • Visualizing Work (Designing Self-Radiating Information Flow)
  • Controlling work-in-progress (Pull Vs. Push)
  • Measuring and managing flow (Cumulative Flow Diagrams, Control Charts)

Kanban Mechanics

  • Making policies explicit (Classes of Service)
  • Managing Shifting Priorities (Threshold Limits, Bottlenecks)
  • Meetings (Standups, Replenishment, Reviews – Strategy, Risk, Service and Operations)

Kanban Simulation

  • Team based hands-on physical game designed to practice the concepts and mechanics of Kanban. The game shall require participants to optimize the flow of work, track data (Lead Time, Cycle Time), prioritize and allocate resources as they experience several simulated events throughout the game.
